Different lifestyles between Americans and Chinese
&
Live in peace with differences

Part 2: Welcome

As we all know, due to different believes and values, people from all over the world rarely have similar lifestyles. It can be adequately explained by the difference in lifestyles between Chinese and American students. For example, under the profound influence of Confucianism, the Chinese believe in collective interests. Contrastly, the United States emphasized the significance of individualism(Xing,1995). Therefore, due to fundamentally different values, various lifestyles between Americans and Chinese are inevitable.

The lifestyle can be reflected by work and leisure

In addition, as the definition of lifestyle in the business dictionary, the way people live can be embodied in their attitudes towards work and leisure. It is common for Chinese students to spend nearly the entire weekend in the library. Meanwhile, American students tend to have more social activities. Some Americans even start to hold fancy parties on Thursday afternoon. As a result, it would be better for Chinese students to live in a community that has more Chinese residents in order to enjoy a comfortable life. With a familiar pattern of life, they are likely having a satisfying weekend. Otherwise, people have to suffer from constant noise from next door every weekend.

Solution towards contradiction

However, the conflict caused by different lifestyles cannot always be avoidable. Since most students are required to live on campus for the first two years, they cannot choose their roommate. Rather than living with other Chinese, most Chinese students are assigned to live with students from other countries. Accordingly, the discrepancies in lifestyles are more explicit. In order to have a better living experience, students need to learn how to address such a problem. Based on the suggestions on reconciling the contradiction on Brit.co website, people should be respectful, have frequent communications, and set necessary rules(Wang, 2018).

First of all, showing respect goes both ways. To get respect, we have to respect others first. Besides, it is the foundation of communication. Once roommates have more conversation, especially when there’s a problem, it is easier to resolve for both participants. Effective, proactive, and sufficient communication can eliminate conflicts and strengthen the bond between roommates. Making necessary rules is one of the prerequisites for a better relationship as well. With roommate agreements, the unnecessary contradiction can be prevented. Because of the entirely different mode of life, initially I have a terrible living experience. In contrast to my roommate, I always keep late hours. Thus, her alarm clock continually disrupts me from sleep. In the meantime, my habit of turning on the list at midnight affects her sleep as well. Consequently, we can not get along with each other. Several weeks later, we can not bear each other any longer and choose to have face-to-face communication. Instead of asking one another to adapt to our lifestyle, we choose to show more respect. We made rules—the light of the bedroom must be turned off at 11:30 pm; the cell phone should be switch to vibrate mode whenever an alarm clock needs to be set up earlier than 7:00 am. Fortunately, we resolve the conflict in terms of having a harmonious living environment.

We should live in peace with differences

Nevertheless, to most people, dealing with conflicts is challenging. They are not willing to face up to problems such as living with different people. Yet, differences are common in society. Rather than complaining about others all the time, we’d better try to change ourselves. Instead of simply denying a person merely by his or her lifestyle, we should learn how to coexist with differences and solve the problems (Heineken, 2017). It is well known that the university is a new starting point for every people. We left our family, step into a new and unfamiliar environment for the chance of being outstanding. Therefore, instead of fearing for upcoming problems, we should step out of the comfort zone, learn to face up to the issues, and deal with them successfully from getting along with different people. Undoubtedly, once we overcome these challenges, our college life will be more meaningful and unforgettable.
